Jordin Sparks debuts at 10; Elliott Yamin debuts at 169
American Idol winner Jordin Sparks debuted on the Billboard 200 at #10, selling 119,000 copies. Media is making a big deal out of the fact that Jordin Sparks is the lowest-selling debut of any of American Idol’s previous winners, but that’s by far a bum rap, as far as I’m concerned. No Air is picking up in buzz, and Tattoo hasn’t even peaked. We haven’t heard the last of Miz Sparks!
Compare:
Kelly Clarkson’s 2003 debut, Thankful, opened at #1 with 297,400 copies sold.
Ruben Studdard’s 2003 debut, Soulful, also entered at #1, selling 416,600 copies.
Fantasia Barrino sold more than 239,000 copies of her 2004 debut, Free Yourself, entering the chart at #8.
Carrie Underwood’s 2005 debut, Some Hearts, opened at #2, selling 315,000.
Taylor Hicks debuted at #2, selling more than 298,000 copies of his 2006 self-titled debut.
Meanwhile, Sparks isn’t the only American Idol debutante. Season Three also-ran Elliott Yamin’s Target-exclusive Christmas offering, Sounds of the Season, sold 7,200 copies to enter the charts at #169.
